‘cream of the crop’ for SOAK, Plymouth on 25th January

On January 25th I will present a new performance peice as part of the SOAK Live Art event at Leadworks in Plymouth. Organised by Sarah Blissett and Kerry Priest, SOAK is a bi-monthly live art series with a number of performers each time, bringing together live art, experimental performance, film, spoken word and music. For SOAK I will perform ‘cream of the crop’, a development of the research and testing I did on residency at Live Art Ireland in October 2023. Looking at grass and plant life, at rural life, at the impact of the dairy industry, the piece considers interaction of human and other-than-human systems. Simple actions with props and tasks are structured into a sequence, threaded through with spoken text. There are bin liners, a bucket, gloves, knee pads, a body, and words that slip between contexts of climate, sport, and agriculture.

‘toward an emblem’ presentation video now online

The recording of the zoom live performance of the text and image work ‘toward an emblem’ is now online at the CAMP website. The slide-film with reading was presented as part of the CAMP Huddle event on 8th December. My performance runs to 25:39 on the timeline. It is followed by a short Q&A with the online audience, and then there is a presentation by artist Sarah Trotter. Follow the link to the CAMP website HERE and scroll down to watch the video.

online text/image performance on December 8th

At 6.30pm (GMT) I will present ‘toward an emblem‘, a slidefilm with live reading, as part of the Huddle series organised by CAMP. I have been interested in the concept of the emblem for a number of years, and wanted to find a way to share some of this in both textual and visual form through a performance on zoom. The Huddle project feels a good opportunity to share this work in progress, and allow space for some dialogue or discussion.

The emblem draws my attention because of its malleability, its function as a communicative device, but one that is unstable, variable, mobile. Bringing together materials or elements from diverse contexts and from conflicting sources, the emblem as assemblage sits awkwardly within categories and classification. Juxtaposing collages that strain taxonomy and poke at order with texts that bring together theory, ornament and repetition the presentation will test what can be said in the present with a worn out or junked vocabulary.

The zoom link for the event can be accessed via the CAMP website: https://www.camp-membership.org/huddle/ A recording will be posted here after the event.

revised dictionary performance at The House, Feb 15 2022

On Tuesday 15th February 2022, I premiéred a new performance work, ‘revised dictionary supplement’ at University of Plymouth theatre venue, The House.

With thanks to Melaine Le Bars for sound and lighting support. And thanks to everyone who made it on a wet and windy Plymouth night.

new performance on February 15th

On Tuesday 15th February, at The House, University of Plymouth, I will present a performance that responds to the text of ‘revised dictionary supplement’, the second of the projects published in At Sounds Like: 3 Projects. Using dance, improvised actions, and gestures I will treat the textual material as a score for movement, as a ground for further inscription, and as an occasion of variant reading. The live event will draw attention to the materiality of language, to writing as going on, to (im)possibilities of (mis)communication.
