Teaching and Project Management

Over the past twenty-five years I have gained experience of teaching and management in higher education across courses in art, writing, and performance. In the same period, I have published and engaged in research in these fields, and continue to extend my art practice in relation to this activity. I have a Diploma in Fine Art, and BA, MA and PhD qualifications in areas of English Literature, Theatre and Poetry, and completed a PGCHE at Falmouth University in 2009. Current activity includes supervision and examination at Masters and PhD level, and involvement with curriculum development and innovation in learning and teaching.

I have worked in project and exhibition management across visual arts, theatre and performance in an independent capacity and under contract. Following undergraduate study in Fine Art, I joined artists cooperative, All + 10 Sorts, Limerick, Ireland. As a member of the cooperative I managed their exhibition space at Ormston’s Building, on Ellen Street, Limerick (1986-1988) coordinating, installing and promoting the exhibition programme.

While teaching part-time at University College Dublin, three colleagues and I set up a production company, Bright Boy, to produce site-specific theatre works. A highlight of the company’s work was the event doubl’n babble on (a celebration of the work of James Joyce and Samuel Beckett) which was presented at Newman House, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin by Bright Boy Productions,  in May 1996.

I worked as a design, production or marketing assistant on a number of community and locally engaged arts projects for companies including Greenwich and Docklands Festival, Box Clever Theatre Company, LIFT, and Greda Arts (1999-2000). In 2001 I worked as project manager for Artsadmin on Bobby Baker’s Box Story which was first presented as part of LIFT’01, June 2001. Following this I managed the UK and international tour of this project through 2001 to 2003.

My interest in the intersection of visual and verbal art works resulted in the joint curation with Robert vas Dias of Verbal inter Visual, a day of workshops and papers at Birkbeck College, London with an accompanying exhibition at the Lethaby Gallery, Central St Martin’s College of Art & Design (May 2001).

Since moving to Devon in 2003, I have worked on a number of curatorial, creative, and academic projects in different roles. These include working as project lead, collaborating with partners, and initiating funded projects within social enterprise and artist-led contexts.
