making A7 booklets for Tiny Library

Language Landscape and the Sublime Symposium

I will be running a workshop as part of the symposium Language Landscape and the Sublime on June 30th. The workshop is part of a programme running across two days at Dartington and Sharpham estates near Totnes, Devon on June 29-30.

The workshop is a collaborative project between botanist Richard Lewis and myself. We have described it as follows for the participants:

 

The Overlooked Specimen: Toward a Herbarium for Schumacher College
(a workshop looking at and thinking about looking at plants)

In this workshop we will look at plants, plants that might be overlooked, bringing attention and awareness to them. We will consider how we look, and what we see, and how we tell the story of how we look and how we describe what we see.

A herbarium sheet presents a preserved botanical specimen with information on its name, collector, and location it was found in. There is a proper syntax to the presentation of material on the sheet, allowing for cross-referencing and showing of relationships. We will consider the method of preserving the specimen, and how ways of looking may generate other information that could be included on the sheet.

In preparation for the workshop, as you spend time on the estate during the symposium, and as we walk to the gardens to begin the workshop, notice the plants around you, and notice your noticing.

Thinking and Feeling: contemporary poetry conference at Plymouth Uni

I spent the weekend of May 20th to 22nd at Plymouth University attending and presenting at Contemporary Poetry: Thinking and Feeling.

I delivered a paper ”a miracle  can you speak  i am electronic’: technology, voice and authenticity in poetry by Holly Pester and Hannah Weiner‘, looking at Holly Pester’s ‘Buddy Holly on my Answer Machine’ from Hoofs and Hannah Weiner’s ‘RJ Romeo & Juliet’ from Code Poems.

There were great plenaries from Redell Olsen on landscape language lines and fields; and from Matvei Yankelevich, Holly Pester and Jack Underwood. Well done to organisers Many Bloomfield and Anthony Caleshu.
