In November – December 2015 I presented a number of works in the exhibition Surface / Contact with Katy Connor, Bryony Gillard, Clare Thornton at Exeter Phoenix Galleries. The exhibition developed from the project Redefining Print which all four of us had participated in through the previous year. For the exhibition I made a series of photographic works, and a video installation for three monitors.
‘full stop Comic Sans Bold 800pt’, photograph mounted on aluminium, 584 x 508mm, exhibited in Surface / Contact, Exeter Phoenix Galleries, 18th Nov to 21st Dec 2015
The photographs presented me as a masked figure, with each A5 card mask being pierced by a different punctuation mark e.g. full stop, parentheses, ellipsis.
‘voiceover gestures’, 3-channel video installation, 13’ looped, exhibited in Surface / Contact, Exeter Phoenix Galleries, 18th Nov to 21st Dec 2015
The video installation consisted of a set of three short videos on a looped sequence. The image showed a gesturing figure, apparently gesturing along with a passage of speech. The audio was a time matched but distinct spoken sequence that set up a disjuncture between the visual and audible aspects of the speech event. The text for the passages was developed in response to questions of censorship and silencing, along with a sense of the voice as an identifier.
