Performance

Performance is an element of my practice that ranges from reading poetry and other texts, to singing, to durational work that involves making and being in a space.Texts written in a different context may prompt a performance response, a site or occasion can guide the actions, or an incident will give rise to a necessary action or task that becomes the base for the performance.

Some of these works are linked by the use of fabrics, of garments and the modification or embellishment of these. The action of making or altering the garments takes place within the performance context and allows for conversation or discussion with visitors. These conversations feed into texts that can be performed or presented later in the performance. Often the conversations clarify the concerns or expand the focus of the performances, introducing unexpected material or bringing attention to something that might have been overlooked.

Other aspects of performance practice involve the gathering and editing of text, via verbal or written material occuring in the site or environment, or through conversation and response to encounters with people. Aspects of awareness of and discomfort in display and variations on being present run through the work.
